Layer I · The Pilgrim's Play

A morality play, in eleven panels

Michaelmas, 1151. Outside the Disibodenberg abbey, where a 53-year-old nun named Hildegard has been quietly rehearsing the strangest song-play in Europe, a pilgrim named Adelina pauses with the crowd. She has been fighting with her sister for six months. She does not know it yet, but tonight she will watch her own argument turned into people.

01

MICHAELMAS, 1151. Adelina of Bingen, eleven days walking, smells incense and roast onion.

ADELINA: Brother — is the play already started?

PARADISE
02

A courtyard packed with weavers, drovers, and one very bored donkey. A wagon stage waits.

MONK: Hush, daughter. The Soul has not yet been clothed.

03

ENTER ANIMA — the human soul — naked of everything but a white linen shift.

ANIMA (sung): O dulcis divinitas, et o suavis vita…

(she sounds afraid):

Humil.Cast.Pat.SpesFid.
04

Sixteen Virtues descend — Humility crowned, Chastity in white, Patience holding a stone.

HUMILITAS: Sister, do not fear. We are the daughters of the King.

why serve Him?
05

THE DEVIL bursts through the trapdoor. He does not sing. He never sings. He SHOUTS.

DIABOLUS (spoken, harsh): Why would you serve Him? He gives you nothing you can hold!

06

ANIMA wavers. She steps toward him. The Virtues do not move. They sing.

VIRTUES (in plainchant): Stand. Stand. Stand. The wound is not the end.

ADELINA (whispers): …why don't they grab her arm?

07

ANIMA falls. Long minutes of silence. The play does not stop for her.

ANIMA: I am so heavy. I cannot lift my own name.

08

And then — KNOWLEDGE OF GOD steps forward. Not to lecture. To stretch out a hand.

SCIENTIA DEI: You are not lost. You are merely on the floor. Get up.

09

The Devil is bound in ribbons by sixteen women in white. He sputters. He insults the rope.

DIABOLUS: Ridiculous! Ribbons! I have undone kingdoms — and you bind me with —

HUMILITAS: Yes.

10

ADELINA walks home in the dark. Her feet still hurt. She thinks for the first time of her own arguing rooms.

ADELINA (to herself): If Patience can be a girl with a stone… then what is the loud thing in me?

Adelina walked twenty more years before she died, and she never spoke of the play again. Hildegard's nuns sang Ordo Virtutum in their chapel probably no more than a few times. Nine centuries later, you have read it.
